Factors such as lack of secondary blood supply, having limited anatomic areas for vessel penetration, having very thin feeding vessels, and having limited and variable intraosseous anastomoses inside the talus all make it succeptible to avascular necrosis. In addition to these factors, avascular necrosis of talus arises from being exposed to triggering factors such as trauma, systemic diseases or medications. Patients usually complain of pain but some additional symptoms may be found depending on the underlying cause. Once the diagnosis of avascular necrosis has been made, in symptomatic patients there are several treatment options like core decompression, reconstruction with grafts, ankle arthroplasty or ankle arthrodesis.
