Ankle and foot deformities and their treatment with the Ilizarov method

This article reviews the diagnosis of foot deformities and their treatment with the Ilizarov method. Sagittal plane deformities including foot equinus, cavus, planus and calcaneus deformities; frontal plane deformities including heel varus and valgus; horizontal plane defomities including abduction and adduction deformities of the forefoot and shortness of metatarsals are discussed. Amongst multiplanar deformities, fibular hemimelia and pes equinovarus deformities are emphasized. Important points in the treatment of foot deformities with the Ilizarov method are highlighted and possible complications are discussed.
