Biomechanics and functions of the meniscus

Meniscus, initially described as a nonfunctional embryological remnant, is now known to be a very important structure for the normal functions of the knee joint. The primary function of the meniscus is to improve tibiofemoral joint congruity, thus reducing the stress on the cartilaginous surfaces, and to transmit the load. Menisci also have secondary functions in the knee joint, such as shock absorption, stability, lubrication, nutrition, and proprioception. Meniscus injuries eventually lead to permanent degenerative changes in the knee joint, and development of osteoarthritis. Because of their complex anatomical, biomechanical, and functional properties, menisci are particularly susceptible to damage and injury. While treating these injuries, our primary goal should be to preserve the different components and functions of the meniscus.
