At present there are important problems in joint replacement surgery still waiting to be solved. The critical factor in the success of orthopaedic implants is the primary stabilization at the bone-implant interface. Bone cement, provides an excellent primary fixation of the prosthesis, but it does not promote the biological secondary fixation. The cementless porous coated implants provide a better biological fixation and longer survival of prostheses compared to the cemented options. New techniques to obtain bioactive integration include coating the surface of the implant with ceramics such as bioactive glasses or hydroxyapatite. However, the ideal implant for orthopaedic surgery has not been found yet.
