Arthrosis is a chronic and progressive disease of the ankle and foot. It is characterized by the destruction of articular cartilage tissue and finally causes pain, limitation in range of motion and general disability.

Patients with ankle arthritis usually complain of pain in the anterior of the ankle or dorsum of the foot; pain increases with activity and weight-bearing. Ankle and foot arthrosis is due to approximately 70–80% of secondary and mostly of post-traumatic reasons, unlike knee and hip. Conservative treatment consist of NSAIDs, local injections, orthoses and shoe modifications, limiting weight bearing and exercises. Surgical alternatives are ankle arthroplasty and arthrodesis.

Subtalar arthritis is a disease of the hindfoot which is characterized by aggravation with walking or standing. It causes disability and ankle stiffness. It is often seen after fractures of the calcaneus. Non-surgical methods of treatment are mainly the restriction of the movement and reducing the load on the subtalar region with shoes, brace, NSAIDs and cortisone injections. Surgical treatment should be planned if these conservative methods fail. Subtalar arthrodesis is the most commonly used treatment for turning painful and motionless joint into a painless and motionless joint.

Although mid-foot arthritis is common and a serious disease affecting daily life, it has various causes and frequently neglected by orthopaedic surgeons. Treatment of painful mid-foot arthritis also ranges from conservative treatment to surgical arthrodesis, similar to other arthrosis treatments.
