Tibial plateau fractures constitute about 2% of all fractures and despite the advanced technology today, these fractures continue to be difficult for surgeons. These fractures usually occur following high-energy trauma in young adult patients and low-energy trauma in elderly patients. It should be kept in mind that various ligament and neurovascular injuries may accompany the fractures that occur due to high-energy trauma. As with all intraarticular fractures, the purpose of treatment of proximal tibial fractures is to protect axial alignment, joint surface uniformity, joint stability, and joint movement, to obtain a painless range of motion and to prevent the development of posttraumatic osteoarthritis. Among the methods used in the treatment of fractures of the proximal tibia fractures in order to achieve these goals, the locking plates have a special importance in that they can be applied with a minimally invasive technique. The technical superiority of the locking plates to the conventional plates in terms of some features is an incontestable fact. This review summarizes the reduction methods and the locking plate applications in proximal tibial fractures.
