Although patellectomy had been widely used in the past, its indications have been restricted thanks to deep understanding of the knee biomechanisms today. Considering the patella as a natural part of extensor mechanism of the knee, knee problems following patellectomy is inevitable. A precise technique of patellectomy can partially prevent patellectomy-related problems. In this article, types of total and partial patellectomy, indications, techniques, and disadvantages of patellectomy were reviewed.
