In cases where distal osteotomies may not provide sufficient correction to severe hallux valgus deformities with high intermetatarsal angle, shaft (diaphysis) osteotomies can be preferred. They are particularly indicated in moderate to severe hallux valgus deformities where the distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA) is greater than 10 degrees and 1-2 intermetatarsal angle (IMA) is between 15-20 degrees. There are various techniques available for shaft osteotomy, with the most commonly used being the Scarf, Ludloff, Mau, and Offset-V methods. This section will address general information, indications, contraindications, surgical technique, postoperative care, and complications related to shaft osteotomy techniques in the light of the literature.
