With better healthcare, patients with replaced jointsprosthesis live longer, which increases the need for revision surgeries. Thus, there is increased demand for implants which will survive longer without component loosening or implant wear. Advances in both component design and material composition try to fulfill the high demand from a younger and more active patient population. While there is continous improvement in implant designs, it should be remembered that even the most advanced implant cannot take the place of a proper surgical technique. The latest designs may not necessarily be the ideal solution for every patient. There must be a conformity between patients` demands and what the implant offers. An ideal implant should provide stability without compromising mobility. New porous materials are introduced to enhance bone-implant integration by stimulating bone growth. This review focuses on current component designs and new advances to achieve good fixation to bone, low wear of bearing surfaces, adequate stability and high range of motion for knee arthroplasties.
