Adjuvant analgesics in patients with chronic neck and low back pain

Adjuvant analgesics are assistant drugs in pain medicine that increase the efficacy of the analgesics and decrease possible side affects of them via dose sparing effect. Adjuvant analgesics exist on each step of the World Health Organisation Analgesic Ladder. The decision of which adjuvant analgesic should be administer is made depending on the type and origin of pain, concommitant symptoms and clinical features of the patient. In general, there is neuropathic component associated with chronic neck and back pain. In this article, antidepressants, antiepileptics, local anaesthetics, corticosteroids and central acting muscle relaxants those are most preferred for chronic neck and back pain are reviewed.
