Anterior knee pain is pain in the anterior localization of knee arising from patellofemoral joint and triggered by activities during flexion of the knee such as prolonged sitting, squatting, running, ascending and descending stairs. It is also known as patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFS). The major etiologic factors are defects of extansor mechanism of the knee and lower limb malalignment. Although no consensus has been reached in the treatment of the disease, primary treatment modality should be conservative treatment. Using brace, patellar tapping and restriction of aggravating activities in addition to strengthening exercises of quadriceps muscles and stretching exercises of hamstring, quadriceps, iliotibial band, gastrocnemius and soleus muscles are recommended treatment choices.
