Tremendous advances have occurred in the biomaterials in the last 50 years. In recent years, the use of ceramics in biomaterials has been increasing. These high-tech ceramics are used in total hip and knee replacement, in dental implants and their restorations, as bone fillers and for tissue engineering scaffolds. Here, we reviewed the evolution of the most commonly used ceramics in orthopedic applications and the different approaches used for the problems encountered in this field.
