Diabetes is the currently leading cause behind hospitalized foot infections and lower extremity amputations. The infection usually begins as an ulcer in the soft tissue progressing to the bone underneath. Development of osteomyelitis significantly increases the rate of extremity amputation. A definite diagnosis of osteomyelitis is possible by histopathological and microbiological investigation of bone tissue samples. Treatment is still a topic of debate. This review discusses the clinical characteristics, laboratory and imaging methods in the diagnosis and treatment of post diabetic foot infection osteomyelitis.
